World Diabetes Day

2016-11-14

World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on November 14. This date was chosen in honor of Frederick Banting’s birth, the man who discovered insulin in 1922. 100 years after his birth, Diabetes International Federation and the World Health Organization instituted a day dedicated to diabetes awareness. Later, December 20th 2006, the United Nations decided November 14 to be the official world diabetes day. This special day exists throughout many countries.

Diabetes Definition

Diabete Québec defines diabetes as being: «a chronic, incurable disease that occurs when the body doesn’t produce any or enough insulin, leading to an excess of sugar in the blood. Insulin is a hormone, produced by the pancreas, which helps the cells of the body use the glucose (sugar) in food. Cells need this energy in order to function properly.»

Insulin is a hormone, secreted by the pancreas that lowers the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood by letting the cells utilize the glucose for energy.

Diabetes Symptoms
